Washington, D.C. – This week, Congresswoman Laurel Lee (FL-15) and Congressman Joe Neguse (CO-2) introduced the bipartisan Combating Online Fentanyl Trafficking Act which will bolster the workforce that detects, prevents, and prosecutes online fentanyl trafficking. This bill will improve the Department of Justice’s ability to combat the distribution of this lethal drug while strengthening our national security and cyberinfrastructure.

In 2023, there were over 112,000 overdose deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Washington, D.C. – This week, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (WI-01) and Subcommittee on Elections Chair Laurel Lee (FL-15) sent a letter to the D.C. Board of Elections over concerns about a breach of the voter database on October 5, 2023. Included in this breach was a copy of the voter registration roll and the sale by malicious actors of sensitive voter identification information.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Laurel Lee (R-FL) announced Sarthak Gupta as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for Florida’s 15th District. Gupta, a student at Strawberry Crest High School in Plant City, created Signify, an app that uses image processing to convert sign language into English text, which is then spoken aloud by a text-to-speech synthesizer.

Washington, D.C.Today, Rep. Laurel Lee co-sponsored H.R. 6186, the Temperature Endorsement for Multi-Peril Policies (TEMP) Act, introduced by Rep. Scott Franklin (R-FL) and Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL). The TEMP Act calls for the research and development of a crop insurance policy to cover losses caused by cold exposure and freezes.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) introduced the CBP SPACE Act to ensure Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and seaports are partners in securing trade and travel. Recently, CBP has threatened to cease operations if ports do not pay for screening equipment, putting our national security at risk.

Laurel Lee (R-FL) released the following statement after her bill, the National Human Trafficking Hotline Enhancement Act, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee by a voice vote. This legislation would require entities that contract with the National Human Trafficking Hotline to cooperate with state and local law enforcement when receiving tips through the Hotline.
