Rep. Laurel Lee Votes in Favor of Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted on H. Res. 1367, the Establishing the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump.
“The security failures that occurred on July 13, which allowed for an assassination attempt on President Trump, could have been prevented. Congress has a responsibility to conduct oversight to provide accountability and transparency for the events that occurred that day,” said Rep. Laurel Lee. “This bipartisan task force will help us find the facts and ensure such failures like this never happen again.”
The Task Force will be empowered with all investigative authority of the House of Representatives including subpoena authority.
The goal of the Task Force will be threefold:
- To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination
- To ensure accountability
- To prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again
The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms.
The House will vote on a resolution this week that will establish the Task Force and its members. The task force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats.
