Rep. Laurel Lee Applauds House Passage of HALT Fentanyl Act

February 6, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Laurel Lee (FL-15) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 27, the HALT Fentanyl Act. This legislation will empower law enforcement to crack down on drug traffickers by permanently classifying fentanyl analogues, which are fentanyl-related substances, as Schedule I drugs.

“Our nation has witnessed the inconceivable loss and devastation that the Biden administration’s disastrous border policies have caused in our communities for the past 4 years,” said Rep. Laurel Lee. “I am happy to see the HALT Fentanyl Act pass the House with my resounding support, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to quickly take up this bill to help end this crisis.”

Summary:

  • The HALT Fentanyl Act would permanently classify fentanyl analogues, which are fentanyl-related substances, as Schedule I drugs.
  • Schedule I drugs are substances with a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, as defined by the Controlled Substances Act.
  • Schedule I designation for fentanyl analogues currently operates on a temporary basis and is set to expire at the end of next month.
  • Failing to make this designation permanent could allow fentanyl analogues onto our streets and limit law enforcement’s ability to act.
